The best Macrame owl patterns. tutorials and DIY kits

Macrame owls I think may be the most iconic items to make. They have been around since the 70s but now there are so many modern patterns and tutorials.

I have been digging deep into owl macrame and tried and tested so many different patterns, tutorials, and kits so I can share the best with you.

The owls are intricate and I would say most are intermediate skill level with some harder that I would only recommend for more advanced macrame artists.

Tools needed to make macrame owls

  • Pattern or tutorial to follow along
  • macrame cord
  • scissors
  • wood or metal hoops for some
  • wood stick for some

Top Tips for making macrame owls

  1. Learn all the basic knots prior to help with your confidence
  2. Use a braided cord, this cord is perfect for interactive designs as no fraying
  3. for your first few follow kits, patterns or tutorials before trying to make your own design.

Macrame owl kits

Kits are the perfect way to start with any new macrame design.

They take away all the stress and guessing away and let you concentrate on your knotting.

They also make a great gift, gifting something you made is lovely but for other crafters gifting a kit is the perfect gift.

1. Macrame wall hanging kit

Not only does this kit include a high-quality macrame cord, and clear easy-to-follow instructions. It has everything you need, including a cute little brush!

DIY Macrame Store over on Etsy has a few different macrame kits you can buy.

If you have all the tools and materials already they also offer this as a pattern only.

2. Long wings macrame owl kit

This kit is a little different in the style of the owl. A lot of the patterns I’ve followed don’t have long wings, so if you prefer this style it is definitely one for you.

Lil Creation Handmade have lots of kits and macrame patterns to choose from on their Etsy shop.

If you have all the tools and materials needed then you can buy just the pattern.

This is from DIY Macrame Store again, the owl is the same but you have the added plant hanger.

I love a good macrame plant hanger so mixing the owl as well is just next level!

Again you can buy just the pattern if you have the tools and materials.

Macrame patterns

I always buy a few patterns when learning to make a new macrame design. I like to then mix what I’ve learned from each to make my own design after.

I definitely learn by doing so making lots of different patterns and learning different techniques and tricks allows me to take what I love from each one.

4. Monochrome macrame owl

This one may be a favorite! Weirdly it is the black and white that I love, it looks so clean and modern. Of course, you can change and do any color but I just love the monochrome design.

7. big-eyed owl pattern

This macrame owl pattern really captures the big wide eyes we associate with owls. I like that everything else in the pattern is clean knots and just fluffy eyes.

Also, I think I may prefer the wood ball as eyes over the fake eyes, the black bead nose is lovely also.

Free Macrame pattern and tutorials

If buying patterns are not in your budget or you just want to have a go for free first, then do not worry I have you covered. Do note though that the free patterns and tutorials may not offer as much detail or as unique designs.

If you are really new to macrame I do suggest buying a few patterns as they are easier to follow and offer step-by-step clear instructions.

11. DIY macrame owl tutorial

If you know your basic knots this is easy to follow along with and you end up with such a cute wide-eyed owl at the end.

I used a lovely beach-washed piece of bark and grey macrame cord and love the finished look.

Ability: Intermediate | Time: 2/3 hours

12. Mini owl Christmas ornament

I have shared this one before on my macrame Christmas ornament ideas blog. It was the first ever owl I made to try and build my confidence as they always seemed so daunting to make. I was wrong, once you make one you will be hooked and making all the owls!

13. Multi-colored owl pattern

I like this one as it shows you how to use two colors when making an owl. It can be harder too when and how to mix macrame cord colors.

I found it really easy to follow along and I actually used the same colors used in the tutorial video.

14. Square knot owl tutorial

I like the finished look of this owl. It is the clean look that is achieved using the square knots for the detail of the owl.
